Chapter 7 - CLUB TROPHIES

1846 THE CAPTAIN'S TROPHY This was first played for on New Year's Day 1847, our first medal Competition and is now the pendant on the Captain's chain of office.

1849 SPRING SCRATCH MEDAL This is inscribed "St. Andrews Operatives Club". The club disbanded and their medal was passed on to the club.

1850 THE CROSS CLUBS Originally this was second prize in the medal. Later it became The Spring Handicap Trophy.

1856 AUTUMN SCRATCH MEDAL This was purchased for £3.9s. by members' subscription.

1889 AUTUMN HANDICAP MEDAL This is for the best net return in the Autumn Meeting.

1894 THE JUBILEE CUP Originally a stroke play competition, this is now one of the major knockout trophies. The story of its purchase is told elsewhere.

1902 THE HUGON CORONATION CUP This commemorates the Coronation of King Edward VII and is, with the Jubilee Cup, one of our major match play trophies.

1903 DIAMOND JUBILEE MEDAL The Medal was bought to mark the Club's 60th birthday. The first Class Winner of the Medal Finals receives this.

1906 McGREGOR TROPHY This is played for by the winners of the alternative Thursday Medal competitions.

1910 THE AGGREGRATE MEDAL Guy Campbell also presented this cup. It is given for the best aggregate scratch score in the Spring and Autumn Meetings.

1911 HAIG CUP This is now awarded for one round of stroke play over optional courses.

1920 CHARLES GRIEVE CUP This cup is awarded for one round of stroke play over the New Course. 1925 UNITED SERVICES CUP AND MEDAL The United Services Association presented these trophies and they are awarded to the winner and runner-up for a one round stroke play competition.

1930 THE DR. KYLE MEMORIAL CUP The Club Champion receives this trophy.

1935 JOCK HUTCHISON CUP Jock Hutchison won the Open in 1921 and was a club member. There are two qualifying rounds. The best 32 then compete in match play for his trophy.

1937 SENIORS'CUP Mr John Macdonald presented this cup for competition among senior members over 5 0 years of age. 1937 JAMES STEWART CUP Mr. James Stewart while Vice Captain gave this trophy to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI, It is a one round, stroke play competition for members aged 55 and over.

1945 CENTENARY SALVER The Daily Mail gave this cup to commemorate the Club's first 100 years. It is a single round stroke play event.

1946 AYTON TROPHY Alex Ayton, an Honorary Vice President, gave this trophy. Itis a single round stroke play event on optional courses.

1952 DUNCAN MILLER MEDAL The best scratch score by a player under 21 in the Autumn Meeting wins this medal.

1958 JAMES ALEXANDER TROPHY Mr Alexander was the Old Course Starter. His widow presented the trophy. Committee members and past Captains compete for it.

1959 WILLIAM LAMOND TROPHY William Lamond was Captain in 1953-56. This is a foursomes stroke play competition played on the New Course.

1961 E.P. KYLE CUP Mr. Kyle gave this when an Honorary Vice President. Played on the Eden, it is a foursome stroke play competition.

1966 JACK JOLLY TROPHY This is given to the player with the best net aggregate over the Spring and Autumn Meetings. Jack Jolly was an Honorary Vice President of the club.

1975 (1925) THE FIVE CLUB TROPHY In 1925 the Club Captain Mr. James Spence provided a rustless iron shaft and Mr. Wm. McLaren (Committee Member) provided a putter head. The Trophy was played originally for as "The Visitors' Putter" by visitors in monthly competitions. The competition stopped in 1939 at the start of the war. In 1975 a Five Club Competition was introduced as an 18 hole stroke play over the Eden Course and the Visitors'Putter was re-designed as the Competition Trophy.

1975 THE HAMADA TROPHY Teams of three players compete for this cup.

1975 THE CAPTAIN'S TROPHY In 1975, the Vice Captain, Mr. Tom Gordon, presented the trophy to the club. This was originally on 18 hole stroke play competition played on vacant Saturdays during the winter but later changed to a Sunday in February.

1976 THE WILLIAM HOGG NEW YEAR'S DAY TROPHY In 1976 Mr. William Hogg presented a Trophy for annual competition. The Trophy is awarded on New Year's Day for the best net score.

1984 THE MUSSELBURGH SALVER In 1984 Mr. and Mrs. Ivor Highley presented a Salver to be named "The Musselburgh Salver" for the winners of the Mixed Foursomes' Trophy.

1985 THE FAMOUS GROUSE TROPHY In 1985 Matthew Gloag & Co, the makers of Famous Grouse whisky, set up a national Shotgun Foursomes Competition and awarded the trophy to the winners of the club Qualifying Round.

1986 THE DUNCAN McGREGOR OLD COURSE CUP In 1986 the Reverend Duncan McGregor presented this Trophy to be awarded for the best net aggregate score returned in the Spring and Autumn Meeting by a player over 65 years of age.

1986 THE W.J..M. LAMOND TROPHY In 1986 the family of the late William Lamond (past Treasurer and Club President) presented this trophy as the Club Championship (Silver Section) Trophy for players with handicap of 11 ~ 16 only.

1986 THE LAW TROPHY In 1986 Mr. and Mrs. L. Law presented a trophy as the Club's Championship (Bronze Section) Trophy for players with handicaps of 17 and over.

1990 THE SASAKI S.S.K. TROPHY In 1990 Mr. Kikuchi of the S.S.K. Corporation Japan Ltd. presented this trophy for an annual Fourball Matchplay Competition, the players to have one high and one low handicap player in each pair.

1990 THE ALEX FAIRLIE MEMORIAL TROPHY In 1990 Mrs. A. Fairlie, widow of Alex Fairlie, who died on the course whilst playing a Monthly Medal, presented the trophy to the club. The competition is a Seniors' Stroke Play competition.

1991 THE JAMES TERRY MEMORIAL TROPHY In 1991 Mr. William Terry, son of the late James Terry (Vice President) presented a trophy on behalf of the family, to be played for annually. It is open to members aged 50 and over.

1992 THE ALEX NORMAND ROSEBOWL Alex Normand's family presented this Rosebowl to be awarded for the best net score in the Spring Meeting from those players 55 years of age and over.
